Bulgaria is not in a hurry, whereas Macedonia does not negotiates on identity and language

Bulgaria remains in its position that the Macedonian nation did not exist before 1944. Northern Macedonia also maintains in its position that it does not negotiate identity at all. There is no compromise on these issues, according to Macedonian authorities.

While Foreign Minister Bujar Osmani awaits Sofia’s response to the “nonpaper” sent by Macedonian special envoy Vlado Buckovski, Bulgarian politicians receive the same message about Macedonian identity – that the nation was artificially created in 1944. .

But despite these messages, the Macedonian side claims every day that the identity is not discussed with Sofia. Foreign Minister Osmani does not hide that topics related to language and nation are on the table, but the authorities do not negotiate and there is no compromise.

“There is no talk, no compromises are accepted on these issues, while the topics are on the table. True, the topic is on the table, FRONTEKS has not been signed for years, with all the security implications, the negotiating framework was not adopted because of the language. “So there is another context – this is not negotiable, this is not a matter of compromise,” Osmani said in an interview with REL.

Otherwise, Bulgaria also stands in its position before the EU that the Macedonian nation was invented by Josip Broz Tito while the Macedonian language is the norm of the Bulgarian language.

Meanwhile, after the country’s European integration was blocked by Bulgaria during the German presidency of the EU, talks between the two countries are expected to continue, but not with any major expansion due to the elections expected to be held in late March in the neighboring country.

Portugal now holds the EU presidency. From there come signals that they will not rush into enlargement as a solution must first be found between the two sides, namely between RMV and Bulgaria. According to Portugal, Bulgaria should not be blamed in this case because they want EU enlargement and the inclusion of the Western Balkans in the EU.//
