Three Chelsea youngsters set for a big year in 2021: Billy Gilmour, Faustino Anjorin and Conor Gallagher

In his first season in charge at ChelseaFrank Lampard quickly harboured a reputation for giving young players a chance to thrive, with the likes of Mason Mount and Reece James major beneficiaries.

The Blues’ spending spree last summer means competition is now fiercer than at any point in Lampard’s reign, but here are three Blues stars hoping to make an impression in 2021…

Billy Gilmour

The Scottish midfielder has already made his breakthrough, but it can’t be long before he’s fully established in the heart of Chelsea’s midfield.

It’s easy to forget that Gilmour has made fewer than 10 first-team starts because he looks so at home every time he gets the chance.

Roy Keane only needed to watch a few minutes of Gilmour in action to declare him “world class” – and even at the age of 19 it is easy to see why there is so much excitement around him.

Frank Lampard is blessed with options in midfield – so much so, he could afford to send Ross Barkley and Ruben Loftus-Cheek out on loan this season – but it can’t be long before Gilmour is a mainstay.

Conor Gallagher

Currently on loan at West Brom, Gallagher has earned comparisons with Lampard as a box-to-box midfielder with an eye for goal.

Competition for places in Chelsea’s midfield is extremely high – with Gilmour at the head of the queue when it comes to the next generation making their breakthrough.

But the 20-year-old only needs to look at Mason Mount’s ascent after a successful loan at Derby to see what’s possible if he continues to impress at West Brom.

Even if he doesn’t find a place at Chelsea, he could secure himself a permanent move elsewhere if he continues his progress.

Faustino Anjorin

We have seen a glimpse of the 19-year-old winger already this season after his start against Krasnodar in the Champions League.

A real threat when running with the ball at pace, he has an impressive touch and movement.
