Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho admits even top-six finish is now ‘difficult’ after Manchester United loss

“Even difficult for top six but there’s seven matches to go, 21 points so mathematically it’s possible. It’s not all about the cup, we have seven matches to play in the Premier League.”

Spurs led in controversial circumstances when Heung-min Son fired them ahead shortly after Edinson Cavani’s goal was disallowed by referee Chris Kavanagh, in consultation with the VAR, for a Scott McTominay foul on the South Korean, who went down after being caught by the midfielder’s flailing arm.

United recovered to score second-half goals through Fred, Cavani and Mason Greenwood, making it 18 points dropped from winning positions this season for Spurs.

For the second match running, a Spurs player was subjected to racist abuse on social media, with Son targeted for his role in Cavani’s disallowed goal.

Tottenham have now lost 10 Premier League matches this season

Spurs condemned the abuse, reported it to Twitter and promised a “full review alongside the Premier League to determine the most effective action moving forward”.

Meanwhile, Spurs legend Glenn Hoddle says “no-one would blame Harry Kane” if he leaves the club in the summer.

Kane is said to be considering pushing for a transfer if Spurs fail to qualify for the Champions League and Hoddle said: “No one would blame Harry Kane if he moved now.

“If he said, ‘I’m going to win silverware elsewhere’ and the right offer was there. He’s the one that will make that decision and then Spurs will have to get the best deal they can possibly get. It would be a crushing blow for the team.”
